Women with high blood pressure who become pregnant must be managed carefully. 
 
High Blood Pressure increases risk of
Preterm (early) delivery
Low birth weight (less than 2500g)
Placental abruption (torn placenta)
Preeclampsia
 
Any pregnant woman can develop Preeclampsia (also called toxemia), which is a particular kind high blood pressure caused by pregnancy itself.  Unrecognized it can be fatal to mother and child.
 
High Blood Pressure in pregnancy is Dr. Collins-Hill's special interest.  This may include pre-conception consultation, blood pressure management during pregnancy, and reevaluation baseline in the postpartum period.
 
Any woman dealing with hypertension in the setting of pregnancy may be referred by her family doctor or obstetrician.
